Money Mindset Steps

1.

Everyone, draw a picture of the next season coming up, such as fall, winter, spring, or summer.

2.

On the back of the page draw a vertical line to create two columns. On the left column, write down the “SpendingTemptations” that come with this season for you — it might be a favorite beverage, an activity, a holiday, or special event. On the right column, write down the money-saving or money-earning “Opportunities” that come with this season — it might be things like bringing lunch to work instead of eating out, knitting a winter hat instead of buying one, or taking up dog-walking or pet-sitting for a neighbor.

3.

Ask volunteers to share their “Temptations” and “Opportunities” and have a group discussion based on the coaching questions.

Coaching Questions:

  • What did you take from this experience? Do you think it will change what this next season is like for you?
  • What does this tell you about the way different people think about money?
  • Is there anything new you heard from the group that you’d like to try?

Helpful Hints:

  • As a facilitator, be prepared to share an example of your own “Spending Temptation” and “Opportunities” with the group.

  • Remind the group that changing our behaviors starts with the intention to change.
